SEL Standards

As identified by the Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL), there are five social-emotional competencies, each with specific skills. Every Kindfulness lesson aligns to at least one SEL skill.

1. Self-awareness

Student goal: to establish and maintain awareness of one’s own mental, physical, and emotional states.

  • 1.1 - Recognize one’s emotions. 
  • 1.2 - Recognize the influence of one’s emotions on behavior.
  • 1.3 - Recognize one’s thoughts. 
  • 1.4 - Recognize the influence of one’s thoughts on behavior.
  • 1.5 - Assess one’s strengths.
  • 1.6 - Assess one’s limitations. 
  • 1.7 - Possess a well-grounded sense of confidence. 
  • 1.8 - Possess a well-grounded sense of optimism.
     

2. Self-management

Student goal: to establish and maintain a healthy and rewarding sense of self.

  • 2.1 - Regulate one’s emotions.
  • 2.2 - Regulate one’s thoughts.
  • 2.3 - Regulate one’s behaviors effectively in different situations.
  • 2.4 - Manage stress.
  • 2.5 - Control impulses.
  • 2.6 - Motivate oneself.
  • 2.7 - Set and work toward achieving personal goals.
  • 2.8 - Set and work toward achieving academic goals.
     

3. Social awareness

Student goal: to establish and maintain awareness of the mental, physical, and emotional states of others.

  • 3.1 - Take the perspective of others from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • 3.2 - Empathize with others from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • 3.3 - Understand ethical standards for behavior.
  • 3.4 - Understand social norms for behavior.
  • 3.5 - Recognize resources and supports in one’s family, school, and community.
     

4. Relationship skills

Student goal: to establish and maintain healthy and rewarding relationships with diverse individuals and groups.

  • 4.1 - Communicate clearly.
  • 4.2 - Listen actively.
  • 4.3 - Cooperate and collaborate.
  • 4.4 - Resist inappropriate social pressure.
  • 4.5 - Negotiate conflict constructively.
  • 4.6 - Seek and offer help when needed.
     

5. Responsible decision-making

Student goal: to make constructive and respectful choices about personal behavior and social interactions.

  • 5.1 - Consider ethical standards.
  • 5.2 - Consider safety concerns.
  • 5.3 - Consider social norms.
  • 5.4 - Evaluate consequences of various actions.
  • 5.5 - Consider the well-being of self and others.
