Curriculum Content
The full Kindfulness Curriculum is comprised of three units arranged by topic: Self, Community, Ecosystem. Unit One, Self, is available for the 2014-2015 school year, and teachers are invited to participate in research-based Pilot Program. The subsequent two units will be available for the 2015-2016 school year.
Unit One develops the five core competencies of mindfulness: awareness, focused attention, non-judgement, non-identification, and understanding. Specific skills are embedded within each of these competencies and cultivated through the weekly lessons. Weekly lessons introduce new topics, such as physical sensations, thoughts, or emotions.
Versions of the lessons for K-2 take 15-20 minutes, while lessons for 3-5 take 25-30 minutes to complete. These lessons are complemented by a 5-10 minute daily routine called Me Time that allows students to check in with themselves and apply the mindfulness competencies they're cultivating.
Lesson Format
Each lesson is designed to be easy to read ahead of time and easy to implement in the classroom. The Review section covers Why, Objectives, Time, Materials, and Activities. Additionally, three buttons allow you to view the lesson in relation to Common Core, socio-emotional learning, and mindfulness standards.
In the Teach section, all lessons are segmented into four sections: Inquire, Experience, Reflect, and Share. These sections often involve movement, discussion, breathing, writing, and more.
